I forgot how expensive it is to get setup in a new place, yikes! We knew from the inspection, that even though the house looked really good from the work done by the flipper, it was still built in 1961 and the thermal scan on the walls showed zero insulation. During the summer heat, our west-ish facing wall in the master bedroom (ha, see below) felt like it was on fire. Rather than post old newspapers like in the old west to our walls, our biggest single expenditure was having insulation blown in our walls and installed in our attic. California's mild "Disneyland" fall weather has finally arrived, and I can't imagine how freezing our place would be had we not got the insulation.
So we are somewhat warmer as we sleep on the mattress on the
floor. Why are we sleeping so ghetto? Our beautiful (at least to me, too plain for Rebecca) wooden king-sized bed frame
did not fit from the hallway into any of the bedrooms, so it is currently in
our garage, awaiting our final sorting/organizing. Once we have a good
work space cleared, our neighbor Jose (who is a professional woodworker), offered to
cut it down to a queen-sized piece. We need a new mattress soon anyway,
so hopefully we can finish plugging away really soon, as I’d like to also be
able to park my car in the garage during the winter. If not, I guess I will be scraping ice before
work. Why is it taking us so long? I
think the core cause is that we have so much stuff from a 1800 sq. foot house
(with a 800 sq. foot basement), that requires careful planning and storage to be
able to keep it, working with a 1200 sq. foot house.
It is still surreal that after after 10 full years in
Colorado, we are back in NorCal. It has
been weird having to plan how to divide time between the two families for
Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even weirder has been the super warm weather!
All of our cold weather clothes are now in a giant box in the garage,
contributing to the aforementioned space problem! Both of us would love to
someday move back to Colorado, so I think we’ll hang onto that box, too. Now where to put it?
